Our Story

Although we started life as a publisher, over the years we've become a much more diverse media business. While book publishing is still the largest part of what we do, especially globally, our agency business (Hardie Grant Media) is now a diversified content marketing network, and the content we produce across the business, including the book business and HGX, now ranges from video and audio to PR and events. We have a large commercial team, selling memberships and advertising into print, digital and ambient assets. We represent overseas publishers, and wholesale books to gift shops. Our diversified business has served us well over the past 20+ years, and with experience in content strategy, partnerships and advertising, digital marketing, PR and event management, our integrated divisions keep each other pushing new boundaries.

Some things haven't changed. We remain proudly independent, and Australian owned. But in addition to our offices in Melbourne and Sydney, we now also have offices in London and San Francisco, and employ over 250 people worldwide. We are committed to a culture and workplace that is inclusive, equitable and innovative, including a cutting-edge paid parental leave scheme. Our Diversity Committee (which spans Australia and the UK) actively seeks to promote diversity and inclusion at Hardie Grant and in our publishing. And we are very involved in the movement towards Reconciliation for Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia. We have a strong Indigenous publishing list, we work with CareerTrackers to offer Indigenous internships, we support the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, and we have an accredited Reconciliation Action Plan.

Since 1997, the company’s founders, along with many trusted long-term staff and partners, continue to lead the business into new media and new territories. As a business culture Hardie Grant has a reputation for openness, energy, originality, and market savvy. With increasing global expansion over the past five years, particularly in the US, Hardie Grant has consolidated its position as one of Australia’s leading independent media businesses.
